Current Research: Contemporary Art in Worship

A current research project examines the growth of modern church architecture and contemporary art installations in medieval cathedrals since the mid-twentieth century. This research probes the motivations for renewed interest in the arts, explores the varied responses of cathedral congregations, spiritual engagement with the public, and collaboration with artists. A grant from Duke University in the fall of 2016 enabled initial visits to six English cathedrals. These visits included interviews with the chairs of cathedral arts committees, visual arts advisors, and cathedral canons.
