Current Research

A current research project examines the growth of modern church architecture and contemporary art installations in medieval cathedrals since the mid-twentieth century. This research probes the motivations for renewed interest in the arts, explores the varied responses of cathedral congregations, spiritual engagement with the public, and collaboration with artists. A grant from Duke University in the fall of 2016 enabled initial visits to six English cathedrals. These visits included interviews with the chairs of cathedral arts committees, visual arts advisors, and cathedral canons. I have presented two papers in connection with this research:

“Missional Museums: Anglican Cathedrals, Tourism and Contemporary Art,” American Academy of Religion (AAR) Annual Meeting, November 20, 2017

“Utopia Resurrected and Reconsidered: Modern Art of Coventry and Salisbury Cathedrals,” Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion (SECSOR) Annual Meeting, March 4, 2017
